Internet Statistics & Usage

November 2001

Home access

The home computer is the main way people get on to the net, with 61% logging on from home. That is nearly double the share of internet users who use their computer at work for access.

Home Internet use in the UK continues to grow & grow with over one million new users going on-line between June and September. According to Net number crunchers, NetValue, there are now more that 15 million home Internet users in the UK - a 53 per cent increase during the last year. Furthermore, there appears to be little evidence that this growth is showing any signs of slowing down. Elsewhere, its reported that people are spending more & more time online.

Home Internet use has grown steadily since Oftel's first study in January 1999. In May 2001, Oftel reported that 40 per cent of UK homes were connected to the Net. The role of flat-fee dial-up services has been vital in the growth of the UK's Internet market with just under half of those homes connected to the Net using some form of unmetered narrowband access. This, Oftel reckons, is a key driver in getting lower income groups online and using the Net. Elsewhere, the report found that dial-up access remained the most popular method for getting online.

  • Internet users in Britain log on for an average 446 minutes per month and look at 282 pages during that time, compared with two years ago 257 minutes and 184 pages.
  • 20 percent of users account for 70 percent of all time spent online.
  • Number of on-line companies in the UK: 3.7 million 1.2M registered at companies house 2.5M are Sole Traders.
  • UK companies: using computers - 90%. Using E-mail - 41%. Connected to Internet - 25%.

Population Stats - Sept 2001

  • 33 million people, more than half the UK population has accessed the Internet in the last year
  • Of these, 60% surf from home, 33% surf from work 33% do not have their own Internet connection, but have surfed from friends houses, or Internet cafes, libraries, or schools
  • One million have accessed via games consoles
  • 3 million UK gamers play online
  • 25% of surfers are 35-49 age group, and 20% are 50+
  • Games consoles and TV set-top boxes are becoming an increasingly important way of logging on. About three million people in the UK now use game consoles - such as the Sega Dreamcast - for internet surfing, that was a rise of one million during the April to June period.
  • There was also a 500,000 increase to 1.5 million in the numbers getting online via a TV set-top box.
  • The much-criticised WAP mobile phones were used by about 1 million to access the net.

The survey suggests the stereotypical view of the internet user being young and male is wide of the mark. The study found that 35 to 49-year-olds are the biggest web audience, making up 26% of internet users. And those aged over 50 made up the next biggest group and a fifth of all internet users. This was closely followed by the 25-34 age group with 18.6%. Jupiter MMXI says the rise in popularity of the internet amongst older people shows that the market is maturing. Many elderly users are encouraged to use the net by younger relatives, and then discover they have more time available for web browsing. Another sign of how the internet market has matured is that the split between male and female users is now almost 50/50. "For the first time, we can see the real penetration of the internet in the UK. No longer the preserve of the few, it clearly appeals to a broad spectrum of people - old and young, male and female, rich and poor," said Mari Kim Coleman of Jupiter MMXI.

11th September 2000 - World Net population grows to 300 million

The number of world-wide Internet users is nearing 300 million, with the UK, Germany and Italy leading the way in Europe, says a new survey by analyst firm Nielsen/NetRatings. The US is still the largest wired nation by far, with 137 million people with home access. The second is Japan, at 26.3 million. Europe as a whole has 82 million people online and South-East Asia, including Australia and New Zealand, has 37 million. The UK is Europe's biggest Net nation, with 19.5 million home users. Germany and Italy come second and third. "The UK, Germany and Italy are well worth watching in the coming months as they continue to emerge on the global scene," said David Day, director of analytics at ACNielsen eRatings.com. The results don't change the global picture dramatically. In January CommerceNet estimated that the US had 120 million Net users, Europe had 70 million and Asia/Pacific had 40 million. The statistics don't tell the whole story either. According to CommerceNet, Finland has the highest Net penetration, with 2.5 million out of a total of 5 million online. That's a penetration rate of 43 per cent, which makes the UK's penetration rate of 27 per cent look pretty small

World Statistics

In a March 05 1999 report by IntelliQuest, the most popular use of the Internet is looking for product information, cited by 78 percent of users Information and research was cited by 57 percent of those surveyed as the best things about the Internet, with just 8 percent citing email. Nonetheless, 94 percent of respondents use email with 25 percent of the population using it on a daily basis.

In a study by Cahners they found that 49 percent of business professionals now rate the Internet as extremely useful or useful to source information. According to Andy Weber, Cahner's Executive Vice President for Manufacturing and New Product Information, the Web is an important reference tool closer to the actual sale.

Who's using the Internet

Almost 80 Million US adults now have Internet access and it is estimated that approximately 100 million people in the US will have Internet access by 2000. Last August, a study by Media Mark estimated 53.3 million US adults had used the Internet in a typical thirty day period. Percentage of users between ages 19 - 34 was 41.7%, age 35 - 54 was 48.8% and 9.5% over the age of 55.2

Companies are also actively involved on the Internet. Companies selling their products on the Internet will increase to 56% by the year 2000.

When users are on the Internet

The average US user surfs the Internet six hours a week, outside of email. According to the survey 62 percent of respondents use a computer for an average of 15 hours per week . The highest rate of usage was reported by 30-39 year olds, using computers for an average of 21 hours per week.

It is a well known fact that we in the UK are behind the US in terms of Internet take-up. The latest figures out states that there are now 10 Million Internet users in the UK.
